Streaking Siena Hosts Fairfield on Wednesday

Winners of Three Straight, Saints Look to Keep Rolling in MAAC Play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena has indeed been streaking after beginning the 2023 season 0-6. Winners in its last three and four of its last five matches, the Saints (4-7, 4-1) will look to keep rolling in home MAAC play when they host Fairfield (3-8-1, 0-5-1) at Hickey Field on Wednesday afternoon at 3 PM.

Wednesday's match will be aired live on ESPN+, with the "Voice of the Saints" Emmanuel Berbari and Patrick Meany on the call. Live up-to-the-minute updates will be available by following @SienaSoccer on Twitter.

After beginning the year with a tough non-league state, the Green and Gold have started to pick up steam as of late, rattling off wins at Niagara (1-0) against Canisius (3-1), and most recently at Quinnipiac (1-0). The win at Niagara marked the team's first road win over the Purple Eagles since 2018, and the recent feat over the Bobcats completed the first road win at the Q in program history, as well as the first-ever back-to-back wins over Quinnipiac. Siena has outscored opponents, 8-5, overall in its last five matches.

The team's strong play has come via a variety of players, including a pair of recent MAAC weekly award winners. Freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week following his first collegiate shutout in the Niagara win, while classmate Ben Biton took home MAAC Rookie of the Week honors this past Monday after netting the game-winner over Canisius. Additionally, Biton scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Saints over the Purple Eagles, senior Junior Kone recorded his first collegiate and the team's first individual multi-goal performance of the year, and junior Zach Gardner returned to the team after injury by netting the game-winner over Quinnipiac.

Wednesday's match will begin a streak of three of Siena's final five regular season matches of the year coming within the friendly confines of Hickey Field, where the team is 2-2 this season and boasts a 13-6-6 record in three years and counting under head coach Graciano Brito. More recently, the Saints have out-scored Saint Peter's and Canisius by a combined score of 6-2 in their last two home matches. Siena currently sits in third place in the MAAC standings with 12 points, and is one of four squads with double-digit points on the year.

Fairfield owns a decisive 20-8-6 series advantage since the Saints joined the league in 1990, but Siena has gone unbeaten over the past two years. Siena took a 2-0 win on the road to conclude the 2022 season on November 2, 2022, with current senior Bilal Hersi netting the first goal of the night in just the second minute. The Green and Gold will now aim for the program's first home win over the Stags since September 28, 2016.

Led by the longest active tenured MAAC soccer coach in Carl Rees – who seeks his 250th career victory in his 28th season – Fairfield has lost two straight games and is 0-6-1 since starting the year 3-2. They are also winless in their last nine conference matches dating back to last season. The team boasts a pair of MAAC weekly award winners this season in goalkeeper James Anderson (MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11) and freshman William Peirce (MAAC Rookie of the Week on Sept. 25).
