LOUDONVILLE, NY – Despite the temperature gradually getting colder in the Capital Region, Siena Men's Soccer is entering Saturday's Senior Day match hotter than ever. Winners of four straight and five of their last six matches, the Saints (5-7, 5-1) host new league foe Mount St. Mary's (2-6-3, 2-2-2) with a chance to potentially lockup at postseason berth on Hickey Field at 3 PM.
Wednesday's match will be aired live on ESPN+, with the "Voice of the Saints" Emmanuel Berbari and former Siena standout James Beeston '13 on the call. Live up-to-the-minute updates will be available by following @SienaSoccer on Twitter.
Siena's annual Senior Day activities will include honoring the team's eight graduating members prior to the start of the match, including seniors
Nick Fernandes,
Cole Hellert,
Bilal Hersi,
Salko Kanic,
Junior Kone,
Jack Mendrysa,
Robby Romano, and graduate student
Marley Mascarenas.
After beginning the year 0-6 following a rigorous non-league schedule, the Green and Gold have matched the program's longest win streak since 2010 with four straight victories for the first time in eight years, and have a chance to match the team's longest win streak ever in its 50-year varsity history on Saturday. Siena recently completed a come-from-behind win over Fairfield to begin the week on Wednesday, overcoming an early 1-0 hole in the fifth minute by way of an own goal in the 42
nd minute and a strike from senior
Bilal Hersi with help from junior
Zach Gardner and
Magnus Saaby in the 58
th minute. Now 3-2 at home this season, the Saints are an impressive 14-6-6 at Hickey Field under the direction of fourth-year head coach
Graciano Brito.
The team's strong play has come via a variety of players, including a pair of recent MAAC weekly award winners. Freshman goalkeeper
Bennet Glinder was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week following his first collegiate shutout in the Niagara win, while classmate
Ben Biton took home MAAC Rookie of the Week honors this past Monday after netting the game-winner over Canisius. Additionally, Biton scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Saints over the Purple Eagles, senior
Junior Kone recorded his first collegiate and the team's first individual multi-goal performance of the year, and junior
Zach Gardner returned to the team after injury by netting the game-winner over Quinnipiac.
Currently third in the MAAC standings at 5-1 in league action, Siena has outscored opponents, 10-4, over its last six matches, and 7-2 during its current four-match win streak. The Saints have an ouide chance of locking up a postseason berth for what would be the fourth straight time in as many seasons under coach Brito on Saturday. In addition to a win over sixth-place Mount, they would need a loss by either Rider or Niagara to secure a top-six finish.
Meeting for the second time in program history, Siena defeated Mount St. Mary's in a 2-0 road triumph last season on October 15, 2022. The shutout victory included a late insurance goal in the 90
th minute from current senior
Olafur Freysson. Currently in its second year as a MAAC member, Mount will play its first match in the state of New York this season on Saturday.
Led by fifth year head coach Bryan Cunningham, the Mountaineers are enjoying a three-match unbeaten streak (1-0-2), which includes 1-1 draws against Marist and at Quinnipiac, as well as a 2-1 home win over Canisius. The team is led offensively by freshman Junee Lee, who owns seven total points via three goals and one assist and was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on September 19, 2023. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Ethan Russell owns a 2.09 goals-against average while starting in all 11 matches thus far on the year.
