LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Basketball is set to take part in a neutral site tournament in the Sunshine State for the second straight season as part of its 2023-24 non-conference slate. The Saints will head to Daytona Beach, Florida to take part in the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center November 21-22 as part of four Mid-Major teams in the tournament's Ocean Bracket.
Joining Siena in the Ocean Bracket will be Central Michigan, Milwaukee, and Stetson, with the Saints set to begin action on Monday, November 20 against Central Michigan at 11:30 AM. The winner will advance to the Sunshine Slam Ocean Bracket Championship Game at Noon on Tuesday, November 21, while the loser will play in the Third Place Game at 8:30 PM that evening.
The event's Sunshine Bracket consists of Colorado, Florida State, UNLV, and Richmond.
This year's event will mark the fourth installment of the Sunshine Slam, which is produced by The Gazelle Group and sponsored by the Northeast Conference. In addition to the games in Daytona Beach, each team in the Beach Bracket will host a team from the Ocean Bracket prior to arriving in Florida. Siena will take on Richmond in Virginia on Saturday, November 11 as part of its non-conference schedule, with information on the matchup forthcoming.
Siena is a combined 4-2 against possible opponents it will face in the Sunshine Slam field. The Saints defeated Central Michigan on both ends of a home-and-home series back during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons, including a 65-52 victory at the Alumni Recreation Center on February 6, 1991. The Green and Gold won its only matchup to-date against Milwaukee in 1994, and fell in its lone battle with Stetson in 1981. Siena is 1-1 all-time against Richmond, having fallen on the road in 1993 and won at then-Knickerbocker Arena on January 8, 1994, 88-57.
