WATCHUNG, NJ – Talk about picking up where you left off. Four-and-a-half months after capturing the program's fifth MAAC title and punching a ticket to its fourth NCAA Regional, Siena Men's Golf has reason to keep celebrating. The Saints took home the team title at the 2023 Cornell Invitation in dominant fashion at Watchung Valley Golf Club in Watchung, New Jersey Sunday and Monday.
Following suspension of day one action on Sunday after 16 holes due to weather, the Green and Gold kicked back into gear on Monday to lead the 11-team field by 15 strokes. Siena carded a 36-hole total of -10, 558 (280-278) for the program's second-lowest 36-hole score and second-lowest 36-hole total under-par in program history. Additionally, fifth year
Matthew Ferrari began his extra year of eligibility by winning medalist honors with a 36-hole total of -6, 136.
The Saints claimed the team title after winning three events last year, with Ferrari staying under 70 in both rounds with scores of 69 and 67. Classmate
Nolan Crowley celebrated the start of his return season by tying for third individually with rounds of 68 and 70 for a total of -3, 139. Junior
Dan Brooks (71-77-142) and sophomore
Austin Giroux (72-72-144) also placed inside the individual top ten to round out the team's four counting scores, in seventh and tied for eighth, respectively.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman
Michael McConie rounded out the Saints' five-man competition team with rounds of 73 and 72 to finish +3, 145 in a tie for 15
th individually. Competing as an individual, junior
Nick Lyons shot rounds of 75 and 74 to finish tied for 31
st.
Siena's fall season will continue next weekend as the Saints take part in the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate in Kensington, Connecticut Sept. 16-17. The Saints finished second at last year's event while setting team records for low 18-hole and 36-hole scores, as well as low scores under-par in both categories.
