LOUDONVILLE, NY – The last time Siena Women's Soccer took to Hickey Field, the Saints halted what was then the fourth longest active win streak in the nation. On Wednesday, the Saints will seek to spoil an even longer streak when they return home. Siena hosts MAAC frontrunner Canisius – current owners of the nation's second longest active winning streak at eight straight – in a midweek showdown at 4 p.m. on Hickey Field.
In their most recent home outing 10 days ago on Senior Day, Siena (6-6-1, 3-2-1) battled Fairfield to a 1-1 draw, extinguishing what was then the nation's fourth longest active winning streak at six straight. Now Canisius (9-1-1, 6-0) arrives in Loudonville having won eight in a row, trailing only Duke (nine) for the longest active win streak in the country. The Golden Griffins last (and only) loss so far this season came exactly five weeks ago in a 1-0 setback at crosstown rival Buffalo on Sept. 4.
The Saints return to the Capital Region following a successful stretch where they played four of five away from home, capped by a 3-2 victory at Saint Peter's Saturday. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year
Megan Stowell returned from a one-match absence to factor in the scoring on all three Siena scores – tallying a goal and two assists – to help the Saints snap a three-match winless streak. With the victory, Siena matched its overall win total from the past two seasons combined (six), with still six regular season matches remaining. Moreover, after splitting their four road matches during the challenging stretch, the Saints secured their fourth road victory this fall, marking the program's most in six years since winning five road matches in 2018.
Freshman phenom
Catherine Rogers also added another point to her impressively growing tally in the victory over the Peacocks. Already a program-record four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week who earlier this season became the first freshman in school history to sweep MAAC Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week honors in the same week, Rogers continues to pace the conference overall while ranking fifth nationally amongst all freshmen in scoring with 19 points. She also enters play second overall in the MAAC in goals (seven) and tied for third in assists (five).
The victory Saturday propelled Siena into a tie for fourth place in the MAAC Standings with Merrimack at the halfway point of the inaugural 12-match league slate. Projected to finish ninth in the now 13-team league, the Saints have so far out-performed expectations while already having played the toughest collective part of their conference schedule. With the exception of today's match, Siena has already faced each of the other four teams currently ranked in the top-six of the MAAC Standings, including the programs which comprised last year's MAAC Championship match and who were projected to finish 1-2 again this fall (Quinnipiac and Fairfield).
Head coach
Steve Karbowski enters Wednesday's match on the precipice of history. The Saints leader has amassed 132 career MAAC victories – including both regular season and tournament action – which is tied with former Niagara coach Peter Veltri for the most in conference history.
Off to the best start in program history, Canisius has outscored the opposition by a 19-2 margin during its eight-match win streak. The Golden Griffins have been bolstered by their strong defense, ranking fifth nationally in goals against average (0.36) having allowed just four goals total through their first 11 matches, including no more than one in any contest.
Jordan Spencer anchors the back line for Canisius, where the keeper ranks seventh nationally in goals against average (0.73), 11
th in shutouts (seven), and 14
th in save percentage (.871). The Golden Griffins offense has been no slouch either, as Madeline Weltin currently leads the MAAC with eight goals scored, while standing second only to Rogers in points (17). Meanwhile, Erin Weir ranks fourth nationally in assists with eight.
Siena and Canisius are set to meet for the 36
th time in a series which the Saints have controlled to the tune of a 22-10-3 advantage. Siena is unbeaten in seven straight vs. the Golden Griffins, having won five in a row before playing to draws each of the past two seasons. Dating further back, the Saints are unbeaten in 13 of the past 14 matchups (10-1-3) overall. Moreover, Siena also puts a seven-match home unbeaten streak vs. Canisius on the line (also 5-0-2), with the Golden Griffins having last won in Loudonville nearly 15 years ago by a 1-0 score on Oct. 18, 2009.
Brett Bosley and Salko Kanic will have the call of the Siena-Canisius showdown on ESPN+.
