Water Polo Battles to Begin MAAC Play

Saints Dropped Decisions to La Salle and Villanova to Kick Off Conference Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, VA – After recording its most wins in non-league play in recent memory, Siena Water Polo officially kicked off MAAC play with a neutral site doubleheader in the first weekend of league play on Saturday. The Saints (7-10, 0-2) dropped a 19-6 decision to La Salle before falling in a close 12-9 battle with Villanova at the VMI Aquatics Center in Lexington, Virginia.

La Salle 19, Siena 6

The Explorers sped out to the lead with the game's first six goals, and held a 9-4 advantage at the half by way of three of four second quarter scores in the game. The MAAC associate member continued to pack it on with ten of the final 12 goals in the second half, and held the Saints scoreless during the final ten minutes of play.

Reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and MAAC Rookie of the Week Catherine Williamson joined classmate Quincy Frommelt in scoring a pair of goals, while junior Cece White and sophomore Parker Thomas also found the scoring column. Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Frye played the duration of the contest in-goal, with one save recorded.

Villanova 12, Siena 9

The Green and Gold then endured a closer battle with Villanova, despite giving up five of the first six goals of the game in the opening period. Siena could only manage two more scores in the following quarter, however, with the Wildcats holding an 8-3 advantage at the half. The Saints netted four of the final five goals of the contest, but could not climb back any further.

Thomas and Frommelt steadied seven different Siena scorers with two goals apiece, while Williamson, sophomore Audrey Lacey, sophomore Finn Magill, freshman Rebecca Currie, and Frye all also scoring. Frye also made four saves in-net.

Siena will conclude its first MAAC weekend of the 2024 season with a matchup against #18 Wagner on Sunday, March 17 at 8 AM.
