Box Score LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Men's Soccer kicked off its 2024 campaign with a hard-fought scoreless draw with the visiting UMass Minutemen from Hickey Field on Thursday evening. It is the first scoreless tie for the program since its October 22, 2022 bout against Iona College.
UMass held the overall shot advantage, 11-7, while the sides finished deadlocked on-goal, 3-3. In a physical affair, the teams combined for 25 fouls and five yellow cards. The Saints did, however, hold a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Zach Gardner totaled two of the Saints' three looks on target with the other coming off the foot of
Alejandro Perez Jorda.
Mario Navarro Perez perhaps had the highlight reel of the night as the sophomore fired a bicycle kick from inside the box that sailed just wide of the net in the 70th minute.
Bennet Glinder was stout in goal for Siena, stopping each of the three Minutemen shots on net to preserve the draw. His counterpart, Alex Geczy, totaled three saves as well over his 90 minutes of work.
For UMass, Aidan Kelly, Matt Cence and Alec Hughes had one shot on goal each while Hughes and Cence combined for six of the team's 11 shots overall.
Siena (0-0-1) will return to action next Wednesday, August 28 when the team travels to Lafayette College for a 7 p.m. match. The contest will be the first of four straight on the road for the Saints.
