Siena Men's Tennis sophomore
Oscar Martinez had had quite the encore to his MAAC Rookie of the Year campaign from a year ago.
On Thursday, it was announced by the MAAC office that Martinez was named the MAAC Male Player of the Year as well as a First Team selection and First Team Doubles selection along with playing partner
Emilio Zavala Salinas.
Martinez, a native of La Guaira, Venezuelan, earned his two more Jersey Mike's MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week weekly awards and was the inaugural MAAC Masters Tournament Singles Champion in the fall to qualify for the ITA Conference Masters Championships that were held in Rome, Ga.
On the court, Martinez broke the Siena program record for the most individual doubles matches with 24 wins already to his name this 2024-2025 season.
In singles competition, his 23 wins are just one away from tying the program record for most singles win in a season.
Zavala Salinas, a freshman, and Martinez have paired together for a 7-2 record. The Merida Yucatan, Mexico native has totaled a 15-10 singles record as well as a 12-16 individual doubles record this season.
Siena returns to action this Saturday in the MAAC Semifinals against an opponent to be determined at 10 a.m. from Mercer County Tennis Park in West Windsor, NJ.
Additionally, a total of 50 student-athletes were named to the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Tennis All-Academic Team, announced by the league office today.
To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Sacred Heart University led the MAAC with 10 student-athletes placed on the All-Academic Team. Rider University had the second-most selections with a total of eight honorees, followed by Quinnipiac University and Siena College with six apiece. The duo of Fairfield University and Niagara University each added five student-athletes on the team while Marist University (4), Mount St. Mary's University (4), and Merrimack College (2) closed out the academic lineup.
