Burns Earns Second MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Nod

Sophomore Keeper Was Near Perfect in 2-0 Week

LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the second time this season, Siena Women's Soccer goalkeeper Cate Burns has earned Jersey Mike's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Spencerport, New York standout totaled 11 saves, a .917 save percentage, and a 0.50 goals against average to help lead the Saints to a perfect 2-0 week.

Burns earns MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season (Sept. 1) and third occasion in her young career (Oct. 21, 2024). Moreover, the sophomore becomes the first Siena player to be awarded MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice in the same season since Brooke Boermeester in 2021.

Burns made seven saves last Wednesday night – including the milestone 100th of her young career – as the Saints secured a 2-1 victory in their non-conference finale at Vermont. She then recorded all four of her saves during the second half of a 3-0 triumph over Niagara Saturday to lead Siena to its first MAAC win of the season. Burns secured her fourth clean sheet of the campaign, thwarting a Purple Eagles offense which had entered play ranked second in the conference in scoring (2.17).

Burns has bequeathed one goal or fewer in nine of her first 10 starts, highlighted by a conference-leading four shutouts. She also currently ranks second in the MAAC in goals against average (0.91), saves (44), and save percentage (.830). Through her first 28 collegiate appearances, Burns is currently the Siena all-time leader with a 0.82 career goals against average.

Burns and the Saints return to action Wednesday when they host Merrimack at 4 p.m. on Hickey Field.
