LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - With a 12:30 p.m. scheduled start, the Siena Saints were able to hold off the forecasted deluge of rain, but not a late-arriving Manhattan Jaspers softball team, in today's doubleheader at Siena Field. With the threat of downpour the reason for the earlier start time, the Jaspers bus took a wrong exit and was almost 40 minutes late.
The late-arrivers put on an impressive showing in the first game, winning 6-4. Meghan Farrelly's ground-out RBI and Ericka Kostik's RBI-single led off the first inning and put the Jaspers up 2-0. The Green and Gold posted three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead, thanks to Sarah Rose's (Loudon, N.H./Merrimack Valley) three-run homer. Siena starter Adrian St. Cin (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) had four straight innings where she retired the Jaspers, but was unable to pull out of a jam in the 6th, being charged four runs when Allison Clark relieved her. Carrie Getz's (Slingerlands, N.Y./Bethlehem) sacrifice ground-out in the sixth allowed Sara Prochnow (Reston, Va./South Lakes) to score Siena's only other run in the first game.
The nightcap was a pitching duel between Manhattan's Kara Husband and Tisha Salamino (Las Vegas, Nev./Durango). Both pitched the complete game, both giving up only three hits and Salamino striking out six Jaspers. Manhattan scored in the top of the fourth when Katie Bentz scored on a wild pitch with no outs for the only run of the game.
Siena dropped to 6-16 overall, 4-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Jaspers improve to 10-16, 3-3 in the MAAC. The Green and Gold will return to the diamond tomorrow, April 14 for a doubleheader with St. Peter's with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
