Saints Drop DH to Fairfield

Fairfield, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team swept a doubleheader against Siena College, winning both games in its final turn at-bat as well as both by a 2-1 score.

In the opener, Siena jumped on top with a run in the third inning Christina Teator singled, and went to second following Veronica Arrendondo's walk. Carrie Getz attempted a sacrifice bunt, but beat the throw for a base hit which loaded the bases. Santos was called for a balk, which send home the Saints' run. Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Karyn Kennedy stroked a base hit, and scored on Katie Caputi's thriple to right field. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Ellen Sarosy reached first base with a base hit, went to second on a sacrifice fly and scored on Caputi's single. Mellissa Santos earned her 21st win of the season by striking out 12 batters and allowing just five hits.

The second game scoring started with Fairfield taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Sarosy led off with a base hit, stole second, and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Sandonato. The run scored following Kennedy's ground out. Siena tied the game in the top of the sixth inning off Mary Buckheit's solo home run. Fairfield won the game in the bottom of the seventh when Erin Cullen, who pinch ran after Missy MacDonald began the frame with a single, came home on an error by the left fielder. Santos earned the victory for Fairfield, fanning out six hitters and allowing just two hits.

The Saints travel to Iona tomorrow for a MAAC doubleheader.
