LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior softball player Jodie Fiacco (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) was selected to the Verizon Academic All District I Second Team for the second time in her career-a prestigious listing that considers both academic and athletic excellence. Fiacco, who boasts a 3.78 grade point average in Siena's highly competitive biology program, was third on the team this spring with a .289 batting average.
Fiacco was second on the Saints with three home runs and led the squad with 17 walks. Her .978 fielding percentage ranked with the league leaders, and she made four appearances in the pitching circle striking out six batters in eight innings of work. Fiacco closed her stellar career with 16 home runs and 76 RBI.
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference also released its All-Conference team today, a grouping that included sophomore outfielder Carrie Getz (Sligerlands, N.Y./Bethlehem) and senior shortstop Mary Buckheit. Getz began the 2002 season on a tear, bringing a batting average well over .400 back from the Saints' southern swing. She carried that momentum into conference play and ended the season with a team-leading .389 batting average and 11 stolen bases. Buckheit was second on the Saints with a .376 batting average, three home runs and 15 RBI. Each were selected to the MAAC's second team.
Sophomore Becky Brockman (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Buckheit (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) joined Fiacco on the conference's all-academic team. The MAAC All-Academic team consists of student-athletes who are starters or significant reserves on their respective teams and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher with at least one year of college equivalent course credit. Brockman holds a 3.24 GPA in history and was fourth on the Saints with a .280 batting average. The Saints' shortstop for the last four years graduates next week with a 3.46 GPA in marketing/management.
