The Siena baseball team recently squared off against itself in the inaugural Baseball Strength Challenge designed by head strength and conditioning coach Matt Phelps. The team competed in 11 events, with the Green team earning a 62-56 win over the Gold (grey) team.
"I was really happy with the way the event went and the way the student-athletes bought into it," Phelps said. "Everyone worked extremely hard this semester and the Challenge was a fun way to reward them and to demonstrate the progress they have made."
Junior shortstop Chris Klepps led the Green team, posting individual victories in the 185-pound bench press (20 reps) and the 700-pound leg press (27 reps). The 6-foot, 190-pound shortstop also tied for first with 13 reps in the 80-pound wall curl.
Sophomore pitcher Corey Muscara put on an impressive show in the weighted wall sit. While holding two 40-pound dumbbells and sitting stationary with a 100-pound plate on his lap, Muscara lasted 1:57 before giving in.
Junior Mike Ambury won the 275-bar hold, holding the bar for an eye-popping 1:14. Junior captain Jake Willis won the hotly contested plate push. Willis pushed the 100-pound plate for four 15-yard laps in 30 seconds flat.
Sophomore Nick Messinger won the abdominal core torture event, suspending his body parallel to the ground with just his elbows and toes touching the floor for an astounding 4:17.
Will Hassett and Trevor Reid tied for first in the 225-pound Farmer's Walk, lasting two minutes. Freshman Mike Hurtado won the chin-up challenge, finishing 12 reps with a 45-pound weight attached to his support belt.
