Softball Knocks Off Louisiana-Monroe 6-2

Kelly Boyle blasted two homeruns and Jennifer Griner had three hits to power Siena past Louisiana-Monroe 6-2 in Samford Ala. Friday. Freshman Jamie Piela went the distance, allowing just two runs to pick up her first college win.

Jennifer Granato gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run homerun to leftfield. Griner, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on the play.

The Saints added a run in the fourth on Griner's RBI double to right. Pinch runner Jen McNulty scored after pinch running for Christ Fasano who led off the inning with a hit.

Boyle's first homerun gave Siena a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

Louisiana Monroe scored both its runs in the bottom half of the fifth to cut Siena's lead in half. Lindsay Schafer's double plated both runs.

Boyle provided all the insurance the Saints would need with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh. Piela settled down on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings to end the game.

Piela collected nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Siena will take on host Samford at 11 a.m. Saturday and Saint Louis at 1:30 p.m. The teams will than be seeded and Tournament play will resume later Saturday afternoon.
