Softball Loses Championship Game at Samford Invitational

The Siena softball team advanced all the way to the Championship Game of the Samford Invitational before dropping a 6-1 decision to Louisiana-Monroe in the finals Sunday. Jamie Piela was named Most Valuable Pitcher of the Tournament in defeat. Her sister Andrea was joined by Jennifer Granato on the All-Tournament team for the Saints.

Siena (5-7) began the day with a 2-1 win over Samford. Jamie Piela went the distance in the circle and did not allow an earned run. She gave up just six hits and struck out two.

Andrea Piela gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in their first at bat with a solo homerun. The Bulldogs tied the game with an unearned run in the third.

The Saints tied the game in their final at bat on an RBI single by freshman Rachel Morales.

In the championship game, Siena was held to just two hits in a 6-1 setback to Louisiana-Monroe. Trailing 1-0, the Saints rallied to tie the game at 1-1 on a Jennifer Griner single in the third.

Louisiana-Monroe scored the final five runs of the game and out-hit the Saints 10-2.

The Saints return to action Tuesday at Charlotte.
