Charlotte Sweeps Softball Twinbill From Siena

The Charlotte 49ers softball team (18-5) swept a doubleheader from Siena behind Kristen Bowen's first career no-hitter and by scoring 21 runs. In game one, Charlotte scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 9-0 win, then, in game two, the 49ers behind 10 runs in the final two innings defeated Siena, 12-2.

In game one, Charlotte scored seven runs on eight hits in the first inning taking control of the game. The big hit of the inning was Kaycie Jones' three-run double to right center field. Emily Forbes, Karianne Huffstetler and Evan Miller also had run-scoring hits in the inning.

Then, Charlotte tacked on two more runs in the second inning behind Cee Brooks' massive two-run home run over the left field wall.

The rest was up to Bowen who recorded the program's fifth no-hitter and the first since Betsy Thompson's no-hitter against Furman, April 19, 2000. Bowen collected her 11th win of the season after holding Siena without a hit or a run with four strikeouts and no walks over five innings.

In game two, Jamie Walker and Rachel Morales each had two hits for the Saints. Charlotte scored first when Sarah Malene plated the game's first run on Becky Matthews' single to left center field in the first inning. Charlotte tacked on another run when Brooks led off the second inning with her second home run of the day with a solo blast over the left center field wall.

Siena cut the Charlotte lead in half with a run on two hits in the third inning.

Charlotte then took control of the game with four runs on four hits in the third inning. The big hit of the inning was Forbes' two-run triple down the right field line.

The 49ers would explode for six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. The big hits of the inning were a two-run home run by Kristi Killough over the right center field wall and a two-run single to right field by Lauren Schmitz.

Siena closed out the scoring with a run on a Walker single in the fifth inning.

Charlotte pitcher Christy Murray won her fourth game of the season after scattering four hits with one unearned run and two strikeouts over four innings.
