Canisius Sweeps Twinbill from Siena Softball

April 1, 2006

Box Score

Ashley Benneto went 4-for-4 with three runs scored in the opener, as Canisius scored three times in its first at bat and never looked back in a 6-3 win over Siena in Buffalo Saturday. Jennifer Griner hit two homeruns in the game in a losing effort for the Saints. The Griffs won the nightcap 5-1.

Griner started the opener with a homerun to centerfield to give Siena an early lead, but Canisius quickly answered with three run in the bottom half off starter Tara Campbell to take command.

The Griffs added a run in the second and two in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Griner's two run homer in the seventh accounted for the final 6-3 score.

Campbell settled down to pitch all six innings allowing only four earned runs taking the loss for the Saints. Juliette Bowers picked up the complete game win for Canisius.

In the nightcap, freshman Jamie Piela pitched all six innings for Siena, allowing just one earned run. The Griffs broke open a 1-1 game in the fourth with two unearned runs and salted things away with two more unearned runs in the sixth. Siena had four errors in six innings of defense, negating an otherwise strong outing from Piela.

Andrea Piela had two hits and scored Siena's only run in the third inning.

The Saints, now 0-2 in the MAAC, return home Sunday for a doubleheader with Cornell.
