Final Stats Game 2
Gabe Perez, Scott King and Eric Hildenbrand each had three hits on the day to help Siena past Vermont 5-3 and 5-1 in Loudonville Tuesday. Freshmen Kevin Hawk, Sean Keeler and Will Hassett teamed up to keep the Catamounts at bay in the first game; junior Trevor Reid picked up the victory in the nightcap.
After three scoreless innings, Vermont scored the day's first run with a tally in the fourth off Hawk. Jim Chapman singled home pinch runner Chris Fagan to make the score 1-0. Siena answered emphatically with three runs in its half of the frame. Rick Seltzer doubled to lead off the inning and after Chris Klepps lined out, King singled to right field to tie the game. Hildenbrand followed with a run-scoring double off reliever Eric Thompson. He later scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth inning, Jake Willis doubled down the left field line with one out to score Perez who led off with a single. Trailing 4-1, Vermont scored twice in the sixth to close within a run. Following two one-out walks, Matt Naimoli singled home a run. Hassett then hit Kyle Massie with a pitch with the bases loaded. He was able to work out of further trouble by striking out Will Huntington with the bases loaded and inducing Jason Carey into an inning-ending fielder's choice groundout.
Hassett picked up the first save of his career working the final one and two third innings without allowing a run. Keeler improved to 2-0 in the season with the win out of the pen. Perez' RBI single in the seventh provided a much-needed insurance run that sealed the outcome.
In the second game, Reid was the difference. The junior threw six strong innings allowing just five hits and one run. He struck out three and walked only one, retiring the side in order in three of his six innings of work.
The Siena offense scored in four of its six at bats, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a Willis' sacrifice fly in the first. Nick Messinger's double plated the Saints' second run in the second, and Willis came around to score on Seltzer's RBI triple in the third. Seltzer, Perez and Matt Gidaly all tripled in the second game for Siena.
Vermont did its only damage in the fifth, scoring a run on Huntington's groundout after successfully advancing Jeff Nolet around the bases following a leadoff single.
Siena answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth on two hits and an error. Ryan King pitched a scoreless ninth to close the door.
The Saints, winners of five straight games, begin a three-game series with archrival LeMoyne Friday night at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy.
