Offense Carries Softball to Split with Holy Cross

April 13, 2006

Final Stats

Senior Jamie Walker had a career high four hits in the opener and pitcher Tara Campbell belted a grand slam and did not allow an earned run in six innings of work as Siena topped visiting Holy Cross 9-3 in Loudonville in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday. The Crusaders rode the right arm of Marsha Babcock to a 5-1 win in the backend of the twinbill.

Siena (10-23) broke open a 3-3 game with six runs in the sixth and coasted from there in the opener. The Saints struck first with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Stacey Landini. In the third, Holy Cross (6-19) rallied for two unearned runs to take its only lead of the game.

The Saints recaptured the lead in the fourth as Walker slapped a two out single through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded to make the score 3-2.

After Kelly O'Neill tied the game with a homerun to lead off the fifth, Siena scored six times in the sixth on four hits, highlighted by Campbell's grand slam. Kelly Bolye's double to centerfield forced home the first two runs of the inning.

Campbell, who was relieved for an inning on the mound, reentered and closed the door on the Crusaders. In total, she worked six innings, allowing five hits and two unearned runs. She struck out five and walked four. Boyle and Andrea Piela joined Walker and Campbell with multi hit games for Siena.

In the second game, Holy Cross scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning off Siena starter Jamie Piela. Both pitchers worked three clean innings, before the Crusaders' outburst. O'Neil singled home the first two runs of the game and Amanda Webster and Heather Johnson each had run scoring groundouts. The Saints got out of the inning on a nifty double play, cutting down the potential sixth run at the plate.

Siena scored its only run in the fourth also on Jennifer Granato's seventh homerun of the season.

Babcock took care of the rest for Holy Cross pitching all seven innings and allowing just four hits and the one run. She did not walk a batter and struck out four. Renee Clavette pitched three hitless innings in relief for Siena. Clavette struck out three and did not walk a batter.

SThe Saints travel to Binghamton for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
