Game 2 Final Stats
Starting pitchers T.J. Sheridan and Bobby Blevins combined for 14.2 innings allowing just two earned runs to help LeMoyne hold off Siena 3-2 and 7-3 in a MAAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Loudonville. Siena's Ken Grant suffered the hard luck loss in the opener pitching nine strong innings, allowing just two earned runs.
Andy Parrino had three of the Dolphins 11 hits in the opener as LeMoyne (17-10/7-4) built a 3-0 lead and hung on for a one-run win. LeMoyne scored an unearned run in the third inning on Mike Affronti's RBI single which chased home Jamie Rose who reached on an error. In the fourth, the Dolphins added another run on Phil St. Amant's RBI groundout. Parrino scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh on a wild pitch.
Siena (10-20-1/5-6) charged back for two runs in the eighth on RBI hits by Chris Klepps and Jake Willis. The Saints had a chance to do further damage, but left two men on base. In the bottom of the ninth, Eric Hildenbrand walked to lead off the inning, but was cut down on a failed sacrifice attempts and the game ended on an ensuing double-play groundout.
Hildenbrand was involved in three caught stealings, gunning down two would-be base stealers and tagging out the third on the backend of a double steal attempt. He also helped Grant to nine strikeouts and just two walks in his nine innings.
Sheridan pitched 3.1 no-hit innings to start the game and allowed just four hits and one earned run in 7.2 innings of work. The MAAC Pitcher of the Week was coming off a no-hit performance last Saturday against Manhattan.
Siena took its only lead of the day in the first inning of the second game. Rick Seltzer doubled to deep left field to score Bill Lazio who reached on an error and advanced on Willis' third hit of the day.
Siena starter James Pacifico pitched three perfect innings to start the game, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Ben Gaal's three-run homerun gave the Dolphins a 3-1 lead. Siena quickly responded with two runs in its half of the fourth inning on Phil Cahill's second hit of the game, a double down the left field line that plated two runs.
The visitors turned to the long ball again in the fifth inning as Brian Hansen led off with a solo shot that gave LeMoyne the lead for good. Matt Nandin's three-run shot in the top of the seventh eliminated any hope of a Siena rally.
Willis had two hits in both games for the Saints.
The two teams complete the series with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
