Cornell Silences Siena Softball

April 2, 2006

Final Stats

Siena's bats were quiet in two shutout losses to Cornell University on Sunday. Posting only eight hits over two games, Siena women's softball struggled to put runners on base. Cornell was in command from the start thanks to strong pitching and active hitting in 4-0 and 8-0 victories.

Cornell started the first inning of game one with three hits and a run from Erin Murtha's RBI single to right field.

After a hitless second inning from both teams, Cornell once again struck with three hits in the third, eventually plating Caitlin Warren off a fielding error. The Big Red's starting pitcher Jenn Meunier struck out four Saints in three innings and only allowed three hits.

Meunier picked up the complete game win, striking out nine Saints, while only allowing four hits and a walk.

Warren, Murtha and right fielder Ashley Wolf each had multihit games for Cornell.

The Saints had a prime opportunity in the fifth inning to even up the scoreboard. First baseman Stacey Landini, who went 2-for-3, singled down the right field line to start the rally. Jessica Billow pinch ran for Landini and after another single from pitcher Tara Campbell, Siena had runners on the corners. However, Cornell successfully worked out of trouble leaving the bases full.

The second game followed suit.

Siena only put up four hits over seven innings, struggling to find its rhythm. Senior Christa Fasano went 2-for-3, pitcher Jamie Piela went 1-for-2 and freshman Rachelle Morales went 1-for-3 to account for Siena's only hits of the second game.

Cornell attacked early in the first with a double and three singles to take a 2-0 lead. After a shaky first inning, Piela settled in and only allowed one hit through the next four innings.

Reliever Renee Clavette came in during the top of the seventh after homeruns by Cornell's Jenna Campagnolo, who was 3-for-4, and Haley Mirrer. Clavette eventually give up three more hits and three more runs as the Big Red sealed the Saints fate with six runs in the seventh.

Cornell improves to 14-13 overall and Siena drops to 7-22 on the season. The Saints return to action on Tuesday when they play another non-conference match-up at Vermont.
