Saints Split Twin Bill With Bucknell

April 20, 2006

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Tara Campbell pitched a complete seven innings for the Saints' 1-0 shutout victory in the first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday. The Saints rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second game to tie, but a Bison three-run home run in the sixth inning foiled Siena's chances.

Bucknell's leadoff batter, Erin Curatola, started the game with a single up the middle, but after smart defensive plays, Siena retired the side in order.

Siena's only run in the first inning was all they needed to win. After Senior Jamie Walker walked, a sharp double to right field by Kelly Boyle plated Walker and put the Saints on top for the remaining six innings. After Boyle's double, Alyson DeMarino and Jennifer Granato were the only other Siena hits allowed by Bucknell's Christie Wiest. Wiest pitched the entire game for the Bison, allowing one earned run off three hits, posting two strikeouts.

Campbell took control of the pitcher's circle, allowing only five more hits, striking out six Bison batters.

At the start of the second game, Bucknell was poised to strike. Ashley Beans reached on an error and was later plated by a two-run homer from Lauren Litts.

Later in the third inning, the Saints narrowed the deficit to one run. Walker reached on an error, eventually scoring unearned off a double to left field by Kelly Boyle. Soon after, Boyle launched a solo homer off the scoreboard in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. But as the sun slowly faded away behind home plate, so did Siena's luck.

The Bison broke the stalemate in the sixth inning to seal the Saints' fate. Lauren Wible and Kristin Frick each posted a hit to put runners in scoring position, but Cassie Lloyd's three-run blast put Bucknell on top 5-2. After an uneventful home half in the sixth, the umpires called the game due to insufficient light.

Siena split the doubleheader, making their new record 12-25. The Bucknell Bison are 11-31 on the season.

Saints return to action Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. in Loudonville as they take on the Niagara University Purple Eagles in MAAC play.
