Quinnipiac Takes Two From Siena Softball

April 25, 2006

Final Stats

Jenna Henry had three hits and Maria Browne added three RBI as the Quinnipiac University softball team swept Siena, 6-5 and 5-4, in a non-conference doubleheader, Tuesday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

The Saints scored two runs in the first inning of the first game and another three in the third to give them a quick 5-0 advantage. Shortstop Kelly Boyle had four RBI on a double and a triple. Pitcher Tara Campbell's RBI single in the third gave the Saints their fifth run.

The Bobcats got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs, all but one earned, to take a 6-5 lead. Quinnipiac scored all six runs without the benefit of a single extra base hit. Kristin Sheriff had two singles while Lauren Welch, Cary Simms, Maria Browne, Alyssa Mansolf, Charron Letarte, and Jenna Henry each added a base hit. Browne and Mansolf each had two RBI in the inning while Henry and Sheriff each added another RBI.

Four of the runs were charged to the starter, Campbell, while two (one earned) were charged to Renee Clavette, who came on in relief. As a result, Clavette became the pitcher of record.

The hit for Simms, who was making her college debut, was the first of her career. She'd add another in the sixth.

Carolyn Schmolz (7-8) picked up the win, going six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and four walks. The sophomore from Ghent, N.Y. also struck out two. Jessica Skaare came on in the seventh to earn the save, her first of the season.

Clavette (0-4) took the loss working the final 1.2, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. She struck out one batter.

Jamie Walker and Boyle each had two hits in the opener.

Skaare started the second game by striking out Clavette and giving up a single to Walker. After Bobcat catcher Sara Abbott cut Walker down attempting to steal, Jenn Griner drew a walk. Finally, Boyle blasted a two-out two-run home run to dead center field to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage.

Siena added an unearned run in the second when Jessica Billow scored on a throwing error to push the lead to 3-0.

The Bobcats again used the big inning in the bottom half of the inning when Abbott's two-out infield single scored two runs and Browne followed with another RBI single to pull the teams even at 3-3.

The Saints pulled back on top in the fourth on a single from Christa Fasano that scored Boyle.

Quinnipiac again had an answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Jill Viglione hit a bases loaded 2 RBI single to left center field that scored Michelle Petree and Welch to put the Bobcats back on top, 5-4.

The game was suspended after 5 ½ innings of play with the Bobcats taking the 5-4 victory.

Kristin Sheriff (6-9) earned the victory, pitching three perfect innings of relief. The sophomore from San Diego, Calif. didn't allow a hit or a walk while striking out three.

Jamie Piela (5-14) took the loss for the Saints, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and a walk. She also struck out three.
