Final Stats
Siena pounded out seven runs in the second inning of the nightcap on its way to a 10-2 win that salvaged a doubleheader split with MAAC rival Manhattan in Loudonville Thursday. The Lady Jaspers won the opener 6-3 behind seven strong innings in the circle by Jill Medea.
Jamie Walker and Jennifer Granato led the offensive charge for Siena (14-29/4-4) with five hits on the day. Walker had three of Siena's 10 hits in the opener, but the Saints managed just one run in the third and two in the fourth.
Manhattan (19-19/3-7 MAAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring twice in the first and four times in the second. Stef Gozdziewski homered and Lyndzie Phillips followed with a long drive that went off the left fielder's glove and over the fence to account for the two first inning scores. The second inning rally was highlighted by RBI hits off the bats of Liz Strein and Phillips.
Renee Clavette came in relief for the Saints and did not allow a run in five and a third innings of work. Christa Fasano singled home Siena's first run in the third, and Walker and Granato had run-scoring hits in the fourth.
In the second game, Siena exploded for seven second inning runs. Jenny McNulty's RBI infield single chased home the first run and Clavette and Walker followed with key run-scoring hits. Walker doubled home two runs with a drive over the left fielder's head and she came around to score on one of three Manhattan errors in the inning. All seven runs turned out to be unearned.
Jamie Piela picked up the victory with six strong innings in the circle, allowing just two runs. Piela struck out four and did not walk a batter. Manhattan broke through in the fourth with an RBI single by Danielle Just and added a run in the sixth on Phillips' RBI double.
Siena ended the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, the Saints strung together four hits. Kelly Boyle doubled home the first run of the inning and Piela followed with an RBI double to right. Christa Fasano ended the game with a sharp single up the middle that scored pinch runner Jessica Billow.
The Saints return to action Saturday against MAAC foe Marist at Siena Field at 1 p.m.
