The Siena softball team pounded out 25 hits in a doubleheader conference sweep at Iona Saturday afternoon. Junior shortstop Kelly Boyle had four hits, including homeruns in both games, and seven RBI and senior Jamie Walker had five hits as Siena won 8-4 and 12-6.
In the opener, Siena scored in its first two at bats and built an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Jennifer Griner made her return to the every day rotation with authority, opening the game with a homerun.
Walker had three hits in the opener, including a double in the second inning that plated two runs. The Saints scored twice more in the fifth on a rally highlighted by Andrea Piela's RBI single and added three runs in the sixth on Boyle's first homerun of the day.
Tara Campbell picked up the victory in the circle, but got into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning after working five scoreless innings. Rene Clavette worked the final inning and a third without allowing a run. In the nightcap, the top four hitters in the Siena lineup combined for 11 hits, nine runs and eight RBI.
Griner was 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Walker had two hits and a pair of runs and Jennifer Granto was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Boyle had two hits, including her school-record 11th homerun of the season, a grand slam in the eighth inning.
The Saints woked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings and scored six times to put the game away in the eighth.
Campbell returned to pick up her second win of the day in the circle. The Saints close out regular-season play Sunday at Fairfield.
