Feb. 27, 2007

Box Score

(Edited from gomatadors.com) - The Matadors' bats came alive on Tuesday to the tune of 29 runs, as Northridge defeated Siena 13-5 and 16-1 in a doubleheader at Matador Diamond. Amanda Peek went 6-for-6 with seven RBI in the two games, while Alexandria Alvarado and Sarah Kahn-Shamout each had four hits during the twinbill.

Northridge improves to 4-7-1 on the year, while Siena drops to 0-7.

The Matadors scored runs in the first two innings in both contests. In game one, Alvarado reached on a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Olivas, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a double by Peek. Northridge padded the lead with five more in the second. Jaclyn Rymer started things off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Kahn-Shamout. Jackie Duree followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Rymer and make it 2-0. One batter later, Christina Saenz had the bases loaded and singled up the middle to score two to make it 4-0. Peek added to the lead with an RBI single to score Olivas, while Saenz came home when Micah Putnam reached on a fielder's choice to make it 6-0.

Siena got back in the game with two in the fourth and three in the fifth. The Saints had the bases loaded with two outs and Courtney Mahan drew a walk to make it 6-1. Renee Clavette followed with an RBI single to left to make it 6-2. In the fifth, Siena drew to within one on a swing of the bat by Jennifer Granato, who hit a three-run homer to left-center to make it 6-5.

But Northridge invoked the mercy rule with a seven-spot in the fifth. Alvarado drew a bases-loaded walk, while two Saints errors brought in three more runs to make it 10-5. Peek then drove in a pair with a single up the middle, while Putnam ended the contest with a double to plate Peek.

Peek finished game one 4-for-4 with four RBI, while Alvarado and Kahn-Shamout each went 2-for-3. Saenz added three RBI, with Putnam posting two. In the circle, Amanda Pitzenberger started and allowed five runs, four hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Sam Schroeder recorded the final out of the fifth on a strikeout and picked up the save, allowing one walk.

Jamie Piela performed double-duty for the Saints, going 2-for-3 at the plate and pitching the entire game in the circle. She allowed 13 runs (six earned), 13 hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

The Matadors started game two in similar fashion as game one, as Peek smashed a two-run homer to left with Saenz aboard to make it 2-0 in the first. The home run was Peek's fifth of the year.

In the second, Northridge sent 15 to the plate, scoring 10 times. Kahn-Shamout drove in three during the inning on a single and a double, as did Duree, who had an RBI single and a two-run base knock. Olivas, Peek, Putnam and Rymer also drove in runs.

Siena got one back on a sacrifice fly by Stacey Landini to score Granato in the fourth. But Northridge added four more in the fourth to make it a 15-run victory. Megan Smith led off with a double and came home on another Siena error. Alvarado drove in two with her second triple of the doubleheader, while Saenz singled to left for the Matadors' 16th run.

Alvarado, Duree, Kahn-Shamout and Peek each had two hits in the nightcap, with all four players also driving in multiple runs. Mercedes Lovato went the distance in the circle, striking out five and allowing one run, three hits and one walk.

Granato posted a two-hit game for the Saints. In the circle, Jannelle Iaquinto allowed 11 runs, six hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. Clavette tossed the final 2 1/3 and gave up five runs (two earned) and six hits with one strikeout.
