Box Score
KNOXVILLE, TENN. - With no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, sophomore Cody Brown gave the Tennessee Volunteers a 10-9 victory when, with the count 2-0, he sent an Andy Wells offering over the left-field fence for a grand slam. The Vols' trailed by as many as seven runs and came back to capture their 11th win of the season at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Sunday afternoon.
With the Saints ahead 9-5 entering the bottom frame of the ninth, sophomore Tony Delmonico started the inning with a lead-off homer to left-center, slicing the deficit to three, 9-6. Then, following back-to-back singles by Yan Gomes and J.P. Arencibia, Ryan Jones loaded the bases with a walk to send Brown to the plate with the game in his hands. Wells was credited with the loss (0-3) after he came into the game in the bottom of the eighth to relieve starter Craig Marcellus. Wells threw two innings of work, scattering six hits and allowing five earned runs, while Marcellus threw six innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (two of which were earned), while striking out one and walking two.
Siena (0-11) took an early 4-1 lead after the third inning after junior Rick Seltzer doubled in the first inning, driving in junior captain Jake Willis who also doubled to left field previously in the inning to make the score 1-0. Then in the third, after Moises Rivera walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Seltzer drew an intentional walk to bring up sophomore Phil Cahill who was hit by a Nick Hernandez offering to bring up freshman Anthony Giansanti. The Montville, Conn. native singled to drive in both Seltzer and Rivera.
A solo home-run by Chris Klepps and a three-run homer by Seltzer gave the Saints what seemed to be a commanding 8-1 lead over the Volunteers in the top of the fourth inning.
The Vols' countered with two runs in the bottom portion of the fourth after Gomes homered to left-center and Shawn Griffin drove in Arencibia, who had tripled in the previous at-bat. After the damage was done, the Vols' trailed by a score of 8-3.
The Saints tacked on what they thought would be an insurance run in the sixth when Willis singled up the middle plating Rivera who singled earlier and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The RBI by Willis gave Siena a 9-3 lead.
The Tennessee sixth saw two more runs come in thanks in part to a Klepps throwing error, which plated Arencibia, who originally walked and then advanced to second after Ryan Jones singled. Arencibia reached third base safely after Brown popped out to right field. The Volunteers tallied the other run, which was represented by Jones when he advanced to third and then scored on an errant throw by Willis to make the score 9-5 Siena.
The two teams remained scoreless until Brown's late game heroics in the bottom of the ninth.
The Saints conclude their Southern swing as they open up a three-game set with Tulane University on Friday with first pitch coming at 6:30 p.m.
