METAIRIE, La. - Junior right-handed pitcher Sean Morgan recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts, while Brad Emaus, Warren McFadden and Anthony Scelfo each tallied a pair of hits to lead the Tulane Green Wave to a 6-0 victory over still winless Siena at Zephyr Field Friday evening.
"Sean Morgan pitched a great game," Siena head coach Tony Rossi said. "He just dominated us. They (Tulane) took advantage of our defensive lapses in the sixth inning, but it was going to be tough to score against him because we didn't put the bat on the ball. He just pitched a heck of a ballgame."
The Saints committed a total of four errors on the day, including three in the fourth inning.
The Green Wave tallied their first two runs of the game in the third inning when Emaus and first baseman Tim Guidry initiated the top portion of the inning with a hit and walk, then moved into scoring position after starting pitcher Craig Chaput threw a wild pitch. Scelfo scored both runner when he knocked a two-out single to make the score, 2-0 Tulane.
Junior Cat Everett and Emaus hit consecutive singles, while Guidry reached base on a field error to load the bases in the fourth. Sophomore Nate Simon then hit a two-out two RBI single to give the Green Wave a four-run cushion.
Following Simon's single, the Green Wave added an additional run when sophomore catcher Phil Cahill's throw to second base on a Simon stolen base attempt ricocheted off the glove of second baseman Moises Rivera allowing Guidry to score from third. Simon represented the game's final run as McFadden plated his teammate when he singled.
Chaput (0-3) was accredited the loss as he threw four and two-thirds of work, allowing six runs, eight hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Saints are back in action Saturday when they take part in the second of the three-game set with the Green Wave with first-pitch coming at noon.
