UAlbany Sweeps Siena Softball in Non-League Doubleheader

May 1, 2007

Final Stats

UAlbany swept a softball doubleheader at Siena today to take the season series 3-1. The Great Danes won the opener 8-1 and the second game 11-4. Siena's Jennifer Granto went 4-for-4, including her school record tying 12th home run of the season in the second game.

The Great Danes (28-14) scored in every inning but the third in game one. Kelly Ogden's first inning two-run home run set the tone for the day. Ogden finished the opener with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Ogden fell a double shy of the cycle.

Catcher Kat Smith also had a strong first game at the plate for UAlbany. Smith had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI, including a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Siena managed just five hits - one from each of its top four hitters - in the opener. Pinch hitter Elyssa Michaels knocked her first home run of the season in the fifth inning to account for the only run. Pitcher Jamie Piela went the distance for the Saints, scattering 17 hits.

UAlbany starter Casey Halloran improved to 15-8 with the five-inning win for the Great Danes.

UAlbany jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game, scoring three times in the third and twice in the fourth. The Saints responded with three runs in the fourth inning. Easton Henrikson started the rally with a home run to left field. Jenny McNulty's RBI ground out scored pinch runner Emily Snow with an unearned run and Jamie Piela singled home the Saints' third run of the frame.

Siena nearly tied the game when Kelly Boyle drove a deep drive to centerfield, but Nicole Kothe jumped over the fence to rob Boyle of a potential game-tying home run.

Kothe went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a home run to lead the UAlbany offense in the second game. Ogden and Shane Pais each had three hits for the Great Danes. Leadoff hitter Amber Maisonet went 2-for-4 and starter Marissa Powell pitched four strong innings to pick up the win in the circle.

Granato's home run in the bottom of the seventh accounted for Siena's fourth and final run. The junior third baseman entered the game ranked eighth nationally in home runs per game. The seventh inning shot tied Boyle's school record (set last year) for home runs in a season.

Siena returns to action at Sacred Heart Thursday.
