Softball Swept at Sacred Heart

May 3, 2007

Final Stats

Sophomore Amanda Bradley went 4-for-4 and scored two runs and freshman Adrian Fitzsimon was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored as Sacred Heart completed a doubleheader sweep of Siena in softball action Thursday at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers won 4-0 and 5-1.

Senior Bethany Lemenager allowed just one hit to earn her second shutout victory of the season in the opener. Lemenager also came on in relief in game two to pitch the final inning and help senior Danielle Mellin nail down her first win of the year.

The Pioneers got on the board in the second inning of game one when sophomore Sarah Stack deposited a single into left field, driving home Jill Iazetta with the game's first run. SHU broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stack started things off with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Fitzsimon followed with a single into right that, combined with an error by right fielder Stacie Sueda, brought home Bradley and Stack.

That would be more then enough run support for Lemenager who struck out six and walked only one to earn her third victory of the season. The only Siena hit was an infield single by Jaime Piela leading off the fourth inning.

SHU jumped on top early in game two as Fitzsimon led off the first inning with a walk and came around to score on a hit by Betsy Harvey two batters later. However, Siena tied the game in the top of the third when Andrea Piela scored an unearned run on a double by Jennifer Granato.

Granato was the only Saint with two hits in the nightcap.

The Pioneers got that run right back in the bottom of the inning when Caitlin Carroll hit a single up the middle to bring home Fitzsimon.

The Pioneers took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two runs. Fitzsimon had the big hit, as she laced a double to the gap in left-center, chasing home Bradley and Melissa Mezzanotte to give SHU a 4-1 lead. They would tack on another run in the fifth when Harvey singled leading off, advanced to third on an error by Elyssa Michaels and then scored on a wild pitch.

Mellin scattered six hits over six innings and struck out four to earn the win in the final home start of her career.

Siena hosts Canisius Saturday at 11 a.m.
