Game 2 Final Stats
Jamie Piela and senior Janelle Iaquinto pitched back-to-back shutouts - the first two shutouts for the Saints this season - as Siena closed its season with a non-conference sweep of Quinnipiac on Senior Day in Loudonville Sunday. Piela allowed just three hits as Siena took game one 1-0 and Iaquinto sacrificed just two hits in the best outing of her career, on the final day of her career, as the Saints won game two 4-0.
Piela was matched through the first five innings by Kristen Sheriff in a classic pitcher's duel.
The Bobcats threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on three consecutive singles by Cary Simms, Jenna Henry and Krista Seeman to break up Piela's no-hit bid. But the Saints worked out of trouble with a double-play as Maria Browne flared out to short and Seeman was caught off first. Katie Allendorfer then lined out to short to end the inning.
Siena scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth. Andrea Piela reached on an error to start the inning and Jennifer Granato followed with a sharp line drive single to left field. Granato's hit eluded left fielder Angela Casella, who was charged with a two-base error that allowed Piela to score the game-winning run.
Granato was the only player for either team to post a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. The junior slugger was unable to break the school's single season home run mark, finishing tied with teammate Kelly Boyle's record of 12 set last season. Still, Granato had one of the great seasons in school history at the plate, batting .385 with 12 home runs and 32 RBI.
The second game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth when the Saints got the biggest hit of the day from an unlikely source. Siena loaded the bases on two walks and a Jamie Piela single. Piela has two of Siena's seven hits in the nightcap. Catcher Lauren Weingart then followed with a grand slam to left field, breaking the game open. It was Weingart's first home run of the season.
It was more than enough support for Iaquinto who spun seven strong innings in the circle. It was Iaquinto's first victory of the season and first since 2005, as she missed all of last season with an injury.
Iaquinto was one of three seniors honored between games. She was joined by Boyle and Caitlin Fairclough in an emotional ceremony.
The Saints finish the 2007 season with a 11-25 overall record, 7-11 in MAAC play.
