Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's soccer team dropped an offensive battle to Army (6-1-1) this afternoon falling 4-2 on Siena Field. Black Knights midfielder Chris Conklin notched his fifth goal of the season in the 73rd minute which proved to be the game winner. Siena (3-4-1) mounted a second half comeback, but came up just short as the team dropped its second straight contest.
The Saints came out of the gate firing as they slightly missed four scoring opportunities over the first 22 minutes of action. Siena outshot the Black Knights 9-4 in the first half, and 24-11 in the contest.
With 28:58 on the clock, Army was the first to strike as Chase Spruill tracked down a service from forward Dresel Garrett on the left side and slipped it into the back of the net. The Black Knights took this 1-0 advantage into the half.
Just 49 seconds into the second period, Army extended its advantage to two when Will Swearingen sent a shot in from the left side that was deflected into the goal by a Saints defenseman. Soon after, Conklin posted his first of two scores when he accepted a pass from teammate John Kubeika in the center of the box and placed it into the left corner.
The Saints stood strong despite facing a 3-0 deficit.
Siena began its second half surge in the 74th minute when junior midfielder Mike DeSimone tracked down a ball in traffic, dropped it back to Sebastien Anzevui who rocketed one into the top right corner to put the Saints on the scoreboard. The goal marked Anzevui's first of his collegiate career.
Then at the 80:52 mark, senior co-captain Jason Laffin connected on a penalty kick which was awarded after being pulled down from behind in the box. The score cut the Black Knights lead to 3-2.
Just under three minutes later the Saints missed a prime scoring opportunity to even the contest at three apiece. Laffin began a fast break on the left side, served the ball across goal to the open Geoff Narode who chipped it just wide of the right pipe.
In the 88th minute, Conklin finished on a breakaway opportunity off a Siena failed clear to put the game out of reach.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-4-1 on the season. Siena will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they square off with Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. Game time is set for noon.
