On a crisp, sunny, fall Saturday the Siena baseball team defeated the Siena baseball alumni 17-4 in their annual match-up.
The varsity squad Banged out 17 hits, and was aided by eight alumni errors. This year's addition of the 2009 Saints' baseball squad took full advantage, scoring runs in bunches. The varsity put up three runs in the second, four in the fourth, five in the seventh, and four in the eighth
2008 All-MAAC Tournament selection, sophomore first baseman Kevin Quaranto, led the Saints with 5 RBI, including a two-run home run in the seventh, a two-run single in the eighth and a sacrifice fly.
Senior leftfielder Nick Messinger, another MAAC All-Tournament selection in 2008 had a double, a single and two RBI. Freshman second baseman Ted Trymbiski had two doubles and two RBI and senior catcher Phil Cahill - an All-Conference performer in '08 - was 3-for-3 with three singles. Six Saints' pitchers held the alumni in check, scattering six hits.
For the alumni, pitcher James Pacifico ('07) had an RBI double in the third, last year's MAAC Player of The Year Jake Willis ('08) had an RBI single in the fifth and Mark Massaroni ('77) also drove in a run in the fifth and had a single to right.
Six alumni pitchers struggled to hold the Saints in check. Former major leaguer (Colorado Rockies) Tim Christman had an effective outing, allowing one hit and no runs in 1 2/3rds innings.
A total of 17 alumni made it out this year with 15 playing in the game. All in attendance had a lot of fun, and are looking forward to next year's game.
