Final Stats
The Siena softball team lost its first two games of the season Friday in Natchitoches, La. in the Northwestern State Invitational. The Saints dropped the first game 10-7 to the host Demons and the second 13-4 to Stephen F. Austin.
Jennifer Granato had four hits on the day, two in each game, to lead Siena's offense. Freshman Olivia Clacagni had three hits in the first game, and the Saints trailed just 3-2 before Northwestern State used a four-run fourth to break the game open.
Siena out-hit Northwestern State 10-8 and rallied several times from big deficits. Sophomore Lauren Shaheen pitched three and two thirds innings, allowing seven runs, but just two were earned, as the Saints committed four errors in the game.
Andrea Piela also posted a multi-hit game with two hits, a run scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot.
In the nightcap, Siena scored twice in the first inning on a Granato home run to take a quick lead. Stephen F. Austin put up eight runs in the second to seize control.
Siena's Courtney Birkman had a two-run triple to account for the Saints' final two runs in the fifth. Monica Hirch and Kendall Harper drove in seven runs from the top of Stephen F. Austin's lineup. The pair combined for four hits and scored five runs.
Tournament play continues Saturday.
