Freshman Josh Adams homered twice and drove in five runs to lead Florida past Siena 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium. Junior Eric Mruzek hit a two-run home run in the fourth for Siena.
"Siena has a good club and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in an NCAA Regional", Florida head coach Kevin O'Sullivan said following the series.
Freshman right-hander Tommy Toledo worked five innings in his collegiate debut, totaling five strikeouts and allowing five hits and two runs, to notch the victory.
Florida opened the scoring in its first at bat, plating two runs on two hits off sophomore Craig Marcellus (0-1, 3.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R). The Gators took a 6-0 lead on Adams' first career home run - a grand slam in the third inning.
Mruzek's blast got Siena on the board, cutting the lead to 6-2 in the fourth. Senior Rick Seltzer, who led off the inning with a double down the right-field line, scored on the play.
After a pair of Florida runs pushed the lead to 8-2, Siena posted a four-run sixth to cut the gap to two runs.
Senior Jacob Willis started things off by reaching on a throwing error, UF's first defensive miscue of the year. Following a walk to Seltzer, Gary DerHagopian stroked an RBI single to left center scoring Willis. With two outs, Jason DeFilippo was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
The Saints scored their next three runs on wild pitches. Senior Moises Rivera was retired on a fly out to center field with the bases loaded to end the rally.
Florida answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to break the game open for good.
Sophomore Clayton Pisani went 3-for-3 with a pair of sacrifice flies and the Gators banged out 11 hits, stole six bases and turned three double plays.
Eight different Siena players had one hit.
The Saints return to action next weekend in the University of Virginia Invitational. They play Cornell Friday at noon and the host Cavaliers at 4 p.m.
