Fairfield Takes Down Siena Softball Twice

April 5, 2008

Box Score

The Siena softball team opened its MAAC season Saturday afternoon with two losses at Fairfield. The Stags won the first game by a 3-2 score and the nightcap by a 4-1 margin.

In the opener, Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Kristina Lingo scored on a sacrifice fly after walking to start the inning.

Siena took the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs. Lauren Weingart's scored Andrew Piela and Jenny McNulty who each reached base with hits earlier in the inning.

Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Breanne Morschauser singled home Lingo to make the score 2-2. The Stags won the game in the bottom of the seventh and Lingo was again right in the middle of the rally. After doubling to start the frame, she scored the deciding run after Julia Jacoby hit a ball off the right field fence.

Minice evened up her record for the season at 5-5 by earning her second win of the week. The freshman struck out six hitters, walked one, and scattered eight hits in the seven-inning outing.

Piela went the distance for Siena, scattering nine hits and allowing the three runs.

In the second game, Kelli Panter retired the first 11 hitters she faced for Fairfield, and the Stags provided all the runs she would need in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three times. Riannon Thomas tagged a two-run single to send home the first base runs and Kristie Trifiolis secured the third run with a ground out.

Siena cut into the lead with a single run in the sixth inning when Andrea Piela scored on a wild pitch.

The Stags regained their three-run edge when Morschauser singled and came home on Meghan Borst's RBI double to left center field.

Panter earned her fifth win of the season by striking out a personal best 11 batters. She yielded six hits and no walks in her seven-inning performance. Lauren Shaheen suffered the loss for the Saints. Jennifer Granato had two hits in a losing effort.

Siena returns to action Sunday afternoon at Iona. First pitch of the twin bill is set for noon.
