Rick Seltzer hit two home runs and drove in eight runs leading Siena to a 16-10 come-from-behind win in the front end of its doubleheader at Manhattan Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers won the second game 10-3.
Freshman Zach Hartman picked up the win in the opener for Siena. Hartman twirled six and two third innings allowing just three runs while striking out four.
Manhattan led 8-4 after an adventurous first three innings, chasing Saints' starter Kyle Sumper. The Jaspers scored three times in the first and third innings and twice in the second to build the early advantage.
Gary DerHagpian's two-run double in the second got the Saints on the board, and freshman Kevin Quaranto blasted a two-run home run in the third to cut into the lead.
Siena inched closer in the fourth on Nick Messinger's RBI double, but Chad Salem doubled home two for the Jaspers to push the lead to 10-5 after five innings.
The Saints' offense then took over, scoring 11 times in the final four innings. Seltzer hit a three-run homer in the sixth and a grand slam in the eighth to spark the thunderous rally. Hartman meanwhile did not allow a run over the final four innings.
Siena's first seven players in the batting order posted multi-hit games pacing the Saints 18-hit performance.
The offensive showcase proved stark contrast to Siena's three-hit effort in game two.
Brian Pendergast picked up the complete game win for Manhattan, allowing just the three hits and two earned runs over seven innings of work. He also struck out four in the win.
Manhattan scored five times in the first inning and twice in the second, racing to a 7-0 lead. The Saints scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Eric Mruczek has an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch, and Jason DeFilippo added an RBI single to account for the scoring.
The Jaspers added three more runs in the fifth to give Pendergast a nice cushion to work with.
Salem had two hits and three RBI for Manhattan.
The two teams will play the rubber game of their three-game set Monday at 3 p.m.
