LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The University of Vermont took both games of a doubleheader against the Saints at Siena Field Tuesday afternoon. The Catamounts won the first game 8-3 and the second game 3-0 with some help from Siena's defense. The Saints committed nine errors which resulted in seven unearned runs.
Junior pitcher Jamie Piela gave up 10 hits in the complete game effort and four earned runs. She posted four strikeouts and two walks.
Jennifer Granato supplied all the offense for the Saints, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Jamie Piela helped herself at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance.
Vermont's Alison Daggett also went the distance, giving up three runs on 11 hits in improved her record to 2-2.
Vermont's Jeanine Connolly went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Rachelle Eloschuk did some damage from the leadoff spot. She was 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
Every time Siena narrowed the margin its defense let it down, allowing Vermont to widen the gap.
Vermont's Caitlin Monahan pitched a gem in the back end of the doubleheader, allowing just four hits on her way to a complete game shutout.
Siena's Lauren Shaheen struggled with the strike zone early, allowing four walks and a wild pitch in the first two innings, but fought through it. She stranded nine Vermont base runners during the game, but wasn't helped by her defense.
Vermont got on the scoreboard in the third inning with three runs off three hits and three consecutive Siena errors. From there, it was smooth sailing for Monahan.
Senior Whitney Borisenok went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a walk and the Catamounts only RBI.
The Saints drop to 6-20. They return to action Wednesday at Army.
