Softball Splits Twinbill at Qunnipiac

Olivia Calcagnini's two-run home run in the 10th inning was the difference as Siena knocked off Quinnipiac 6-4 in extra innings in the front end of a road doubleheader Thursday. The Bobcats took the backend 5-0 in five innings.

In the first game, the Saints (16-31) jumped on the board early with two runs in the top of the first on a throwing error. Quinnipiac (20-36) got a run back in the bottom of the third, when junior Cary Simms belted her first homerun of the year over the right field fence. The Bobcats added a run later in the inning on a Siena error, to tie the game at 2-2.

Quinnipiac took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Simms, bringing home sophomore Katie Allendorfer. Siena regained the lead in the sixth, however, on a two-run homerun to center field by Courtney Brinkman. Simms struck again in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game with an RBI single through the right side, bringing home Allendorfer to tie the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied until the top of the 10th, when Calcagnini blasted the deciding hoem run. The Bobcats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, and the Saints took game one, 6-4.

Jamie Piela went the distance in the circle for Siena allowing just three earned runs and keeping Quinnipiac off the board for the last four innings.

Iaquinto took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out six in 9.2 innings. At the plate, Simms went 2-3 with three RBI and Allendorfer went 2-3 with two runs scored.

Piela and Brinkman each had two hits for Siena.

The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the board in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead on a three-run homerun from sophomore Christine Bourdeau in the first inning. The lead increased when Kim Le Bel launched a solo shot in the secind.

Quinnipiac added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Brittany Wyskiel (Seymour, Conn.) to account for the final 5-0 score.

Schmolz sent the Saints down in order in the fifth, and the game was called due to darkness.

Schmolz was nearly perfect in her final game as a Bobcat, allowing just one hit while striking out eight in five innings. Bourdeau went 2-2 with a run scored and three RBI and Wyskiel went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Bobcats, who had hit just eight homeruns as a team all season, hit three round-trippers in the two games.

Siena closes out its season Saturday at MAAC leader Canisius.
