Softball Season Ends with Losses at Canisius

The Canisius College softball program secured at least a share of the 2008 MAAC regular season championship on Saturday after sweeping Siena 6-1 and 7-0 at the Demske Sports Complex. The losses marked the end of the 2008 season for Siena, which finished the year 16-32 overall and 5-11 in MAAC play.

Siena's Renne Clavette was the only Saint to record multiple hits on the day with a single in both games. Jennifer Granato homered in the top of the first in the first inning to account for Siena's only run of the day. Granato finished the season. Granato finished the season with 11 round trippers, bringing her Siena career-best total to 35.

The MAAC regular season title marked Canisius' third straight and the program's 12th in the last 15 years. It also ensures the Griffs will hold the No. 1 seed at the 2008 MAAC Softball Tournament, which is scheduled to start Thursday, May 8, at DeLuca Field in Stratford, Conn.

Canisius juniors Juliette Bowers and Mallory Aldred combined to allow one run on six hits in the doubleheader sweep of as the Griffs earned their third-straight win and 21st victory in the team's last 24 games, dating back to April 2. Bowers moved to 17-1 in the circle with the game one victory after she allowed one run on three hits while fanning eight. Aldred made the start in game two and posted her first career complete-game shutout after she allowed three hits and struck out six in seven innings of work.

Canisius senior Katie Miranto went 3-for-4 with a triple, five runs scored and two RBIs for the Griffs, while Lauren Hope, Cameron Norton, Michelle Fridey and Ashley Bonetto all posted multiple hits in the twinbill. Hope went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and four stolen bases, while Fridey added a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in to the winning cause.

Canisius broke a 1-1 tie in the first game with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI-singles from Miranto and Fridey. In the nightcap, Canisius scored four runs in the game's first three innings and then crossed the plate three more times in the home half of the fourth when Jenny Maheu and Miranto knocked in runs.
