The Siena softball team picked up their first victory of the season by defeating Delaware Friday morning 5-4 in eight innings at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational. The Saints ended the first day of the invitational 1-1 after dropping a 5-2 decision to Towson in the second of back-to-back games.

In game one, the Saints used a balanced offensive attack with four different players driving in a run to pick up the victory. Freshman Amanda Filippazzo hit a go-ahead RBI triple with two outs in the top of the eighth and pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Siena got on the board first with an RBI single from Lindsey McKeever in the second and added two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Delaware (0-2) fought back and scored four unanswered runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Siena answered right back with an RBI double from Olivia Calcagnini in the and the game remained tied at four until Filippazzo's game-winning RBI in extra innings. Filippazzo went on to strike out the side in the bottom of the eighth to close out the victory for Siena.

In game two, Siena (1-5) was outhit 14-3 and had only two runners advance past second. Towson (5-1) took an early 2-0 lead on consecutive RBI singles from Courtney Wittner and Kim Lempa. The Saints came back and tied it up in the third on a Courtney Brinkman RBI groundout after Renee Clavette scored on a throwing error. The Tigers took a 3-2 lead on a Marybeth Herrick sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth and held the Saints to just one hit for the final four innings, a Kat Seeber pinch-hit double in the top of the seventh, to help secure the victory.

Siena will resume play tomorrow in day two of the East Carolina Pirate Invitational with rematches against Towson and Delaware.
