March 14, 2009

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Siena baseball team split a non-league doubleheader at West Virginia Saturday, losing the first game 7-6 before rallying for a 9-6 win in the nightcap. Freshman Dan Paolini had seven hits on the day and went 5-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in the second game. The Saints led the first game 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Mountaineers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Saints went in order in the seventh.

Senior Austin Markel, went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in game one for West Virginia. Siena took a two run lead in the sixth on Jason DeFilippo's suicide squeeze and a Paolini double. The Mountaineers followed with three straight singles to start the bottom half, and Markel delivered a two-RBI single to deep left field that plated pinch runner Mark Dvoroznak and Dan DiBartolomeo.

The go-ahead run was scored in the sixth inning courtesy of some clever base running by senior Justin Parks. With two outs and runners on first and third base, Vince Belnome was caught in a rundown started by Siena reliever Kyle Sumple between first and second base. With Belnome caught in a back-and-forth chase, Parks advanced to home plate before Belnome was tagged out to put the Mountaineers up 7-6 heading into the last frame of a seven-inning affair.

Senior Chris Enourato (3-0) picked up the win in relief for WVU, earning the victory after pitching two innings and giving up one earned run on two hits. Siena's pitching held WVU to a season-low eight hits in game two as starter Zach Hartman (1-3) took the win after giving up two earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Paolini had one of the top offensive performances in Siena history in the win, finished 5-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI.

Not to be out-done, sophomore Kevin Quaranto went 4-for-5 and short stop William Cardona has two of Siena's season-high 18 hits as did leadoff man Anthony Giansanti who also earned the save with a perfect seventh.

The two teams conclude their weekend series with an afternoon matchup on Sunday, March 15, at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
