Final Stats
The Siena softball team lost their first two games of the UMBC Spring Classic Friday in Baltimore, Maryland. In game one, Robert Morris' Alexa Bryson threw a complete game shutout, striking out 10 and walking none en route to a 6-0 win and in game two, UMBC's Krista Kearns hit a three-run home run in the fifth to help defeat the Saints 6-3.
In game one, Robert Morris' (8-9) Megan Lynch drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, and Brooke Panepinto went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. The Colonials took advantage of three Siena errors and scored four unearned runs. Bryson's 10 strikeouts were a season-high as she allowed just six hits and improved to 5-1 on the season.
Saints' freshman Nastasha Powlowsky went 3-for-3 with a double and classmate Amanda Filippazzo was 2-for-3, accounting for five of the team's six hits.
Filippazzo (1-3) took the loss for the Saints, allowing just two earned runs and walking none in five innings. Senior Jamie Piela pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Game two saw UMBC's Krista Kearns hit a three-run home run in the fifth to help defeat the Saints 6-3. UMBC (14-8) got on the board in the first with a Julia Culotta RBI single. Siena (1-7) tied it at one a piece on an RBI single from Olivia Calcagnini in the top of the fourth. The Retrievers answered back with two in the bottom of the fourth but the Saints pulled within one on Nastasha Powlosky's RBI single in the fifth.
UMBC's Krista Kearns put the Retrievers ahead for good with her three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth, her third home run of the season. Amanda Fefel (6-1) allowed just one earned run in six innings for the win and Stephanie Weigman pitched a perfect seventh to pick up the save.
Freshman Alyssa Sceppaguercio drove in the other Saints run on a groundout in the sixth. Courtney Brinkman (0-3) allowed nine hits and six earned runs in five innings pitched and took the loss for the Saints.
Siena returns to action tomorrow with two more games at the UMBC Spring Classic in Baltimore. The Saints play Binghamton at 9:55 a.m. and will play St. Francis (Pa.) at 3:40 p.m.
