Final Stats
Siena struck first with two runs in the first but couldn't hold the lead as MAAC rival Niagara came back and scored six runs unanswered to help defeat the Saints 6-4 in the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic Sunday in Baltimore, Md.
Niagara (13-7) fell behind early but came back to take a 4-2 lead in the third on a Kayla Hines single that drove in two. Hines finished the game 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI for the Purple Eagles.
Michelle Krier went six innings giving up five hits and three runs while striking out four to pick up the win and Cassie Stone pitched the seventh to pick up the save.
Siena (2-9) started out fast behind Lauren Weingart's two RBI single in the bottom of the first but weren't able to score again until the seventh. The Saints added two more in the seventh behind RBI singles from Courtney Brinkman and Olivia Calcagnini. Brinkman finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Brinkman took the loss for the Saints, pitching five innings allowing five hits and six runs (three earned). Freshman Amanda Filippazzo threw two innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Siena returns to action Wednesday when they visit cross-town rival UAlbany in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
