Saints Sweep Home Opener vs. Binghamton

March 31, 2009

Game One

Game Two

Freshman Amanda Filippazzo threw a complete game one-hit shutout and Renee Clavette drove in two to help defeat Binghamton 2-0 in game one of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader at Siena Field. In game two Lauren Weingart drove in five runs including a three-run home run in the sixth to help secure the sweep.

In game one, Amanda Filippazzo (2-4) threw seven strong innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five and walking two for her first collegiate shutout. The only hit came in the second inning when Binghamton (3-17) loaded the bases with no outs but Filippazzo got Kelly Schuldt to ground into a fielder's choice for the first out and then Sandy Meadows flied out to center and Jenny McNulty threw out Meghan Tucker at the plate for the double play to end the inning.

Renee Clavette provided Siena (4-11) with all the offense they would need when she singled home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Nastasha Powlowsky went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Cyrilla Suker (1-6) took the loss for Binghamton tossing six innings, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out six. Meghan Tucker had the lone hit for the Bearcats.

In game two, the Bearcats got on the board first scoring two runs in the top of the first but the Saints tied it up in the bottom half on a two RBI single from Lauren Weingart. Binghamton came right back to take a one run lead on a solo home run from Stephanie Kolodziejski, her first of the year.

The Saints came back to tie it at 3-3 on a Courtney Brinkman RBI single and took the lead on an RBI double from freshman Lindsey McKeever.

Brinkman (1-3) worked her way out of a jam in the 4th with the bases loaded and just one out but came back strong to strike out Sandy Meadows and got Meghan Tucker to ground out to end the threat.

The Saints added insurance in the sixth when Jessica Mushel scored on an error and Weingart hit her second home run of the season to left center to take an 8-3 lead and put the game out of reach.

Brinkman pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out five to pick up her first win of the season.

Weingart finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI and Olivia Calcagnini and Stacie Sueda both scored two runs for the Saints.

Siena returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on the Cornell Big Red in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
