Final Stats Game 2
Siena won both ends of a conference double-header at Niagara Saturday, taking the first game 4-1 before eking out a 3-2 marathon-14 inning win in the nightcap. The two teams will complete the series Easter Sunday at noon.
Both teams received strong pitching efforts all afternoon - a stark contrast from last weekend's league series at Saint Peter's.
Head coach Tony Rossi switched up his starting rotation, and senior Will Hassett got the ball in the opener. Hassett pitched a three-hit complete game gem, allowing just one second inning run.
The Saints took the lead with a run in their first at bat and scored the eventual winning run with a two-run rally in the fifth.
Anthony Giansanti doubled and scored Siena's first run of the game. He finished with two hits and three runs in the first game and three hitsm including the game-winning hit in the second. Jason DeFilippo's RBI groundout in the ninth provided an insurance run and accounted for the final 4-1 tally.
Junior Marcus Spaulding struck out a career-high 11 batters in game one for Niagara and went the distance.
Pitching was the name of the game in the second game, which lasted twice its scheduled length.
Kyle Sumple and Dan Lazzaroni each delivered exceptional performances for the Saints. Sumple went 6.1 innings and allowed just two unearned runs before giving way to Lazzaroni who went 7.2 innings to earn the victory allowing just one hit and no runs.
Giansanti tripled home the winning run in the top of the 14th. Freshman shortstop William Cardona also had three hits for the Saints and Quaranto had the other two Siena hits.
