McNulty Robs Gaels of Split; Saints Sweep

April 13, 2009

Game One

Game Two

Jenny McNulty barreled through the centerfield fence to rob Courtney Christie of a grand slam and prevent the Gaels from taking the lead in the sixth inning of the Saints 4-0 game two victory of Monday afternoon's MAAC doubleheader at Siena Field. In the opener, Lauren Weingart hammered a three-run home run to deep left center while Amanda Filippazzo and Jamie Piela combined for seven strong innings in the Saints' 6-2 win.

In the nightcap, Siena (10-17, 5-3) got on the board first with back-to-back RBI singles from Weingart and Piela in the bottom of the first and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Courtney Brinkman's RBI single.

Brinkman started out strong in the circle, striking out four in the first two innings but got herself into trouble in the sixth when Iona (8-17, 0-4) loaded the bases with just one out, but Brinkman got Alyssa James to ground into a fielder's choice and then got Courtney Christie out on McNulty's spectacular defensive play to end the threat and get out of the inning unscaved.

The Saints would add another run in the bottom of the sixth on Renee Clavette's RBI double, her second double of the game, to push the lead to 4-0.

Brinkman (5-5) pitched six scoreless innings allowing three hits while striking out seven and walking just one to pick up the win. Piela tossed a perfect seventh, striking out two to secure the shutout for the Saints.

Clavette finished the game 3-for-3 with the two doubles and a run scored.

Deanne Algeo (2-8) took the loss for the Gaels, pitching six innings allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out five.

In game one, Filippazzo got the Saints on the board first with an RBI infield single in the second inning but the Gaels came back to tie it up on Sarah Jackson's RBI groundout in the fourth.

Siena came storming back in the fifth and took the lead back on an RBI single from Clavette and added another run on Olivia Calcagnini's RBI single before Weingart came to the plate and hit her sixth home run of the season to give the Saints a 6-1 lead.

Saints starter Amanda Filippazzo got into trouble in the sixth when she loaded the bases with two outs but Piela came in and shut down the rally, allowing just one run to score and keeping the Saints lead at 6-2.

Filippazzo (4-8) tossed 5.2 innings and didn't give up a hit until Courtney Christie reach on an infield single with two outs in the sixth. She picked up the win for the Saints allowing just the one hit, two runs (one earned) and struck out six and Piela picked up her second save of the season in 1.1 innings of relief.

Sarah Jackson (6-6) took the loss for the Gaels, tossing a complete game allowing six runs (four earned) while striking out seven.

The Saints will return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on the Colgate Raiders in non-conference action.
