Jess Berkey hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first and Cornell held off Siena late to take game one 4-2 Thursday afternoon in Ithaca. In game two Cornell scored nine runs on 10 hits in the first inning and 12 different players had a hit as the Big Red rolled 16-2 in five innings to sweep the doubleheader.
In the first game, Cornell (25-5) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first for Berkey and she delivered, hitting her seventh home run of the season to left center to give the Big Red an early 4-0 lead.
Siena (4-13) got on the board in the fifth behind freshman Nastasha Powlowsky's solo home run and added another run in the sixth on Renee Clavette's RBI but weren't able to come back from the early deficit.
Amanda Filippazzo (2-5) calmed down after the first but still took the loss for the Saints tossing a complete game allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out three.
Lauren Marx (5-1) picked up the win for Cornell throwing five innings giving up two hits and a run and Ali Tomlinson picked up the save in two innings of relief.
In the back end of the doubleheader Cornell pounded out 16 runs on 18 hits and knocked out Saints starter Courtney Brinkman (1-4) after just two innings. Junior Ashley Garvey went 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored and was one of five Cornell batters with multiple hits. Nine different players drove in a run for the Big Red.
Jenna Stoller threw three innings allowing two runs (one earned) and Nikki Dulaney (1-0) picked up the win throwing two innings of scoreless relief.
Garvey finished the day 4-for-5 with six RBI to lead the Big Red.
Jenny McNulty and Lauren Weingart each had an RBI single for the Saints and Amanda Filippazzo struck out four and allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief.
The Saints will open up MAAC play Saturday when they host Fairfield in a doubleheader at Siena Field in Loudonville at 1 p.m.
