Siena split a non-league doubleheader with Cornell Tuesday at Siena Field. The Saints lost the opener 15-3 before rallying for a 7-4 win in the literal nightcap. Anthony Giansanti homered to give the Saints the lead for good in the second game and senior Matt Moberg closed the door with two innings of solid relief.
Cornell (13-19) scored in every inning but the second and dominating the opener from start to finish. The Big Red grabbed a 4-0 lead in their first at bat on home runs by Nathan Ford and Jadd Schmeltzer and an RBI single by Scott Hardinger. They never looked back adding a run in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth before Siena got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on Dan Paolini's sixth home run of the season.
Cornell answered with three runs in the top of the sixth and Siena scored its final run in the bottom half on Kyle Hudon's RBI ground out.
Brian Billigen paced Cornell's 19-hit attack with four safties from the leadoff hole. Domenic DiRicco and Brandon Lee each had three hits and Nathan Ford and Mickey Brodsky added two hits each. Four Siena players hit safely.
The Big Red led 3-0 in the second game after scoring three times in the third inning off relieve C.J. Sohl. Sohl settled down and picked up the victory with three innings of work.
Siena (9-29) took its first lead with a four-run rally in the fourth. Eric Mruczek singled home the first two runs, Kyle Barbato's sacrifice fly scored the third and Phil Cahill's sharp single to left gave the Saints a 4-3 advantage.
Cornell tied the game on Fran Hager's single in the fifth, but Siena responded to take the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Giansanti homered to start the rally and Mruczek later delivered another RBI hit before Kevin Quaranto scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch.
Senior Matt Moberg earned the save by locking down the Big Red in the sixth and the seventh. He struck out three and did not allow a hit. Siena weekend starters Will Hassett and Kyle Sumple each pitched scoreless innings to start the game for the Saints in midweek preps.
Siena travels to NJIT for a doubleheader Wednesday.
