Angie Sangelli and Brittany Gardner combined for 10 strikeouts as Syracuse defeated Siena 2-0 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader in Syracuse, N.Y. In the nightcap, the Orange got another strong pitching performance as Jenna Caira tossed a complete game, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 to lead Syracuse to a 5-0 victory and the sweep.
In the opener, Siena (11-24) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth before Gardner relieved Sangelli and struck out the next two batters to keep it a scoreless tie.
Syracuse (28-14) would go on to score twice in the fourth on RBI's from Jorden Rosen and Lindsay Wosek to take a 2-0 lead and then held on for the victory behind strong pitching.
Freshman Amanda Filippazzo helped keep the Saints in the game, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six in the complete game effort.
Gardner picked up the win for the Orange, tossing 3.2 innings of perfect relief while striking out eight.
In game two, Stacie Sueda broke up Jenna Caira's no-hitter with a pinch-hit infield single in the top of the sixth.
The Orange got out to an early 4-0 lead on Lacey Kohl's three-run home run in the third.
Siena threatened in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases but Caira struck out Sara Gallacchi to end the inning and keep the Saints off the board.
Nicole Miller finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Caira picked up her 14th victory of the season with the complete game shutout.
Senior Jamie Piela took the loss in game two, as she gave up four runs on four hits in five innings.
The Saints return to MAAC play on Saturday when they visit the Niagara Purple Eagles at 12 p.m.
